Previous guest host Wil O'Neal has tech credentials galore: He's a senior editor at CNET, the web's premiere review site for personal technology. But what about Wil O'Neal, the dude? Here's our Q&A with the tech geek who would be co-host.
What city are you from originally?
I grew up in Berkeley, California.
When did you first realize you were a tech nerd?
I first realized that I was a tech nerd in 1982 when I asked my mom to buy me a Commodore Vic20 so that I could practice programming in Basic. I was in the 7th grade and I was taking my first programming course.
How did you become a tech journalist?
After college I taught a computer class at Castlemont High School in East Oakland for a year. Not only was the job difficult, and the kids hardcore, but I wasn’t making any money and could barely afford to support my family. So I got a job at an operating system company called Geoworks as a Quality Assurance Tester. The rest is history.
What are some of the geekiest things you've ever done?
One of the geekiest things I’ve ever done was installing Linux over a 14.4 modem on my 4MB Pentium 90 machine back in like 1995. It took forever.
Why do you want to enter the world of television?
I came down in July and co-hosted Attack of the Show for a week and it was a ton of fun. Also, I’ve been working on video game and/or technology magazines or web sites since 1996 and I’m ready to try something else.
Were you a viewer of The Screen Savers/Attack of the Show before you appeared on it?
No. I first watched Attack of the Show in July when I knew that I would be a guest co-host. I have watched Xplay for some time now.
Are you much of a gamer? If so, do you have any gaming allegiances?
That’s a difficult question to answer. Compared to many of my friends, no; but compared to the average American, well…then yes. I’m not one of those guys who will play any game just to be playing a game. I like specific games and play the hell out of them. I love Madden as well as shooters like Half-Life, Ghost Recon, Call of Duty, and Counter-Strike. I’ve never really played RTS games or RPGs. I’m not sure what it is but there’s something about having to spend a bunch of time building stuff before I can get into the mix seems like a waste of time.
Why do you think you're the best candidate for the co-host position?
I’m more of a technical (hardware/gadget) guy than a gaming guy and I think the show could benefit from that.
How do you think you'll win over the rather demanding viewers of AOTS?
By just being myself.
