Tech Interview: D-Link Gaming Router
Posted By: Joe Paulding - Tuesday, February 05, 2008 9:00 AM

So imagine you're sitting in your apartment, playing Call of Duty 4 on Xbox Live or the Playstation Network and kicking major ass. Then all of a sudden, the screen gets choppy, enemy players are jumping around, and your lag bar goes red. So you go see what your roommate is doing, and it turns out he's downloading the entire 2nd season of Mad About You.

Now, besides liking bad TV, your roommate is killing your gaming experience. So what do you do? You go get the D-Link Xtreme N Gaming Router, which automatically detects what connections are being used for playing games, and gives them priority. So while your roommate will have to wait a little longer for Paul Reiser, you can go back to dominating 12 year olds.

My roommate just bought this router about two weeks ago and it works great. Easy to setup and he has had no problems with lag yet while I am using internet.
The only problem with it is its price tag, $200 is alot of money just to get a golden sniper rifle and other golden guns, but then again it is quite entertaining to watch.

or you could just set your router to limit bandwidth to a sertain ip address.

This thing probably seeks out UDP packets and gives them priority, only thing is some p2p networks do use UDP as a way for you to download your stuff. One popular one now is Bittorrent, its not a lot but some sites use UDP trackers in place of TCP and I wouldnt be surprised if this "gaming" router does not know the difference between the 2. Also for 200 bucks, how much more could you rip someone off? If someone is seriously into gaming that much I highly doubt they dont know how to set up there own network so that this will not happen, but hey maybe im wrong.

I have a linksys router. I never problem laging with before playing on xbox live wireless. I would never go with different company like d link. I think linksys is a better company.

Linksys is "ok" while they still function. But I've got to say, I have 3 DEAD linksys routers in about a 3 year period, but I've never had a d-link die since I switched to them. I own a D-link DIR-655 and one of these DGL-4500's and they are the best home routers I have ever owned.

D-link definitely makes the best routers, but $200 is a little pricey. I'd get another cable or DSL connection first.
