Save XP: The Petition That Could
Posted By: Brian Leahy - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 2:37 PM

Want Microsoft to keep supporting Windows XP after June 30, 2008? You'd better hurry up and add your name (and personal contact information) to an online petition to stop Bill from pulling the plug on XP!

Online petitions are probably the best way to accomplish goals*.

In only 36 hours since being posted, the petition has snagged 12,621 e-signatures. The only other petition to grow faster was titled, "Declare Caturday Official!"

Show your hate for Vista by signing up for tons of spam right here!

Vista is awsome, if you hate it, its only cause you have an old piece of siht computer, try upgrading. The people complaining to save XP are the same ones still running Office 2000, and Photoshop 5.0. Get with the times ... I support an infrastructure of 500+ Vista nodes, and about 500 XP nodes, and I recieve twice as many calls on errors with XP than Vista.

Mind you I dont support Vista Basic, have heard it sucks, but never used it, actually I've never seen it either.

Posted by Narocue - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 2:45 PM
I do think they should support XP for at least another year though ... ITs a lot of users to just drop ... but thats MS for you, they dont care about their customers, just the $$$ they spend.

I havent bothered switching to vista but my friend has it and it looks great to me.

Posted by vismortis - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 3:00 PM
comming from a gamer vista sucks there are a tun of games that are hard to get to work or just flat out wont work on vista and the producers say well theres nothing we can do.

i hate vista. and my pc can run it just fine. though there are a tun of XP users that they are just dumping kinda unloyal.

another intresting fact (G4 found it ) Pirates pirate XP 2x more than Visa and trust me its not because its vista is harder

Posted by sparda_11 - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 3:14 PM
I have Vista and the fact is, there is more support for XP then there is for Vista. The compatibility for Vista isn't really there yet. It has nothing to do with an old piece of shizit cpu. As far as anyone is concerned, if you have XP, you're up to date!

yea Narocue i have a bran new laptop running vista premium... it blows. I hate it, xp is better (at least more stable). and I dont run any of the stuff you said.

@narocue
what company doesn't care about the $$$?

Posted by travelmaps - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 3:40 PM
im sorry if you dont like vista... you haven't actually tried it or are obsessed with all the antihype about it and are already biased.

"coming from a gamer" .. duh it's G4! no i'm a soccer mom posting on g4tv's news section. wtf. of course you dont like vista you obviously don't pay any real attention to what's going on around you.

vista, currently, is more stable and user friendly than xp ever has been. period.

Posted by random_luigi07 - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 3:47 PM
suuuure it is

Posted by Narocue - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 3:47 PM
First off, Vista is much, much more stable, and SP1 hasnt even been released yet. People get frustrated and scared with change, and that is where the Vista haters come in. I am by no means a Microsoft Fan, but Vista impairs those who havent even gotten a grip on XP yet, and then MS goes and changes the way it looks, and where things are located, so that hate it right off the bat.
Also vismortis, if the game was made in the last year, it plays just fine on vista. Like I said before, its the people trying to run old stuff on it. And the developers can put out patches to make it work, but they dont cause then it costs them.
Vista haters - If you dont like it, buy a mac, its more your style.

Posted by Narocue - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 3:53 PM
What is so horrible about Vista?

Its more stable than XP
It looks way nicer than XP
It has more features than XP
If your a gamer, new games are Direct x 10 (Vista Only)
The integration with Media Center Extenders is awsome

The only negative I can tell about Vista is that it takes more ram to run than XP did. But if you have a computer built within the last year, odds are you have 2GB ram, if you dont your not a gamer

Posted by slimmer - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 5:31 PM
"First off, Vista is much, much more stable" ?????
"Its more stable than XP" ???????????

What a joke, I use Vista Home Premium on one HD and XP pro on another HD and I myself use Vista 99% of the time but I will not advise anyone using XP that is happy with it to switch to Vista because it is no better and has less compatibility with other products. (I like trying new things and am bummed that I actually paid for Vista)

Posted by jamestkirk69 - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 6:57 PM
vista is fantastic, c'mon people, it IS stable, and its pretty, WoW, Bioshock and Crysis and Orange Box work just fine and dandy

so yes...i know your 486 running '95 is great for that spreadsheet, and you still havnt beaten the ciberdemon in doom yet....but its time to upgrade

Posted by hardwire - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 6:59 PM
ok ok vista sucks xp rocks mac killed my inner child its all good go with what you like no one is forcing you to get vista no one says you cant have xp any more all they are saying is they will not produce any more sp's and thats fine if the system dosent get any flaws after new game production or software

there is only one thing i have to say about people saying that vista sucks

people said the exact same thing when xp came out but im sure most the people flaming vista werent alive when xp came out

peace yall thats my input

Posted by Bookshelf - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 7:09 PM

Looks like a genius way to create a database and compile identities to steal.

Hey... why not just give them your Social Security number and save them a step?

Posted by samr64 - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 7:28 PM
vista blows. so does xp. get used to it.

Posted by blakezilla - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 7:49 PM
I am little concerned by the people that say that vista is more stable/superior. I got brand new computer 2.4quad core w/ 2 gig ram and it is still super duper SLOW. Everyone says that the graphics are what does it well i have all that junk turned Off and it is still SLOW. I didnt have a choice between Vista or Xp when I bought my comp, only Vista was offered. Some things are neat but it seems like MS did the sdame kind of update as college text book publishers. Put in one new feature and charge out the butt for it.

Posted by blakezilla - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 7:53 PM
Also since I got my computer in Dec in has locked up four or five times and totally crashed two or three times. My old computer would crash...but at least I knew there was a memory prob with it. It wasnt XP dying it was my computer, as for the new computer it IS VISTA dying not my hardware. And the windows media center sucks. It locked my computer up the first time I opened it and tried to configure it.

Posted by Metonic4289 - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 8:11 PM
I have xp... I also have vista... mind you its only home basic, and I'll eventually upgrade to premium, but I have no problems with Vista. As amatter of fact aside from taking up memory, I've come to feel Vista is better than XP, thats my opinion, now if you don't know how to use a computer then stay with XP because Vista can be a little confusing. Now basic limits you in functions, but premium will give you anything you want. Now whether MS should stop supporting XP, not now.. They stopped supporting 98 only a few years ago. Regardless XP is abotu as good as it can get so id rather them work on vista.

Posted by Dosagu - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 8:22 PM
I have the top of the line Alienware pc
The Area 51 ALX Crossfire
I got this baby 2 weeks ago with everything the can put, I got it for $8,590.00, It came with vista Ultime, as soon as i tried it i could see then it look cool but it just didnt fell good. The fat is vista sucks, I installed Xp64.

Any person than likes vista, is a person than know nothing pcs. Xp pro is better than Vista, if you want somethin better than xp then get linux. I´m a modder and i tell you Vista sucks!!!

Posted by Rooster7787 - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 9:51 PM
Is there a petition to sign if we want XP to die? I want them to tank XP. This is probably the best thing to happen. If they don't appropriately update and fix vista by then, it'll tank Microsoft. Businesses and even the government, will start leaning more heavily on other OS, and eventually, maybe we can get game support for STABLE systems.

Posted by CosmoBubba - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 10:06 PM
Man, seems like there's always so many nerds complaining every time a new OS comes out. If people listened to the complaints, everyone would probably still be running Windows 3.1.

Posted by Frankotaco - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 10:30 PM
i think canning XP would not be good. alot of people don't need Vista. my parents wouldn't be able to use the comp while i am away at college if i put vista on it. ending XP support, bad. but, i have Vista on my laptop and i haven't had a problem with it yet. it don't have the biggest and best stuff. only 2 games, Halo and The Movies. but alot of video, audio, graphic editing stuff. and it all works great. every piece of software i used to use works better and faster then any XP computer i have ever worked on. in fact when i am home and i look up stuff online for my parents. i do it on mine cus it loads web pages faster then the XP one. this may be due to processors, which is to technical for me. but based on what i use it for, Vista has done nothing but make things easier. if you upgrade. Vista is a pain. but if you get a new system and move stuff over from say a separate portable HDD, what i did. then id say it works great. just my opinion and experience though.

Posted by tays014 - Wednesday, January 16, 2008 11:24 PM
I haven't bought a new pc yet and i cant tell u how vista really is but man I still have XP I hope they don't stop supporting it

Posted by Storm1968 - Thursday, January 17, 2008 5:38 AM
As a PC repair tech, I can say that if you are running one of the lower end versions of Vista, you're going to have issues. Same is true for the lower end versions of XP. Why? Because the lower end versions of the OS are watered down versions of the OS. I have seen lots of issues because of this. I'm running XP Pro and haven't had any issues at all. I'm looking to upgrade, but I'm only going to do it if I can get Vista Premium or Ultimate... and after they release SP1. I did the same thing when I went to XP. Why? Because XP didn't become more reliable until after SP1. Learned my lesson once.

Posted by lcromy - Thursday, January 17, 2008 7:44 AM
Like several people have said before me...Vista is awesome and I would NEVER EVER go back to XP.

Again, if you have a PC that can handle Vista, its a great experience.

People forget that XP was the same as Vista is now back in 2002. All kinds of complaining occured because of slow old systems.

What short memories.

Posted by Bookshelf - Thursday, January 17, 2008 8:04 AM
people really just need to get over themselves. i was also one of those people who said "i will never use Vista" but i got a quad core and 4 gigs of ram. and i said to myself, well XP only sees 2.5gb of my ram... and no one really supports XP x64... so ill just go with Vista Ultimate x64.

Ive used Vista now for 4 months. and i will never go back to XP. it just feels so outdated now. searching for programs in the start menu is a dream. way faster than using the mouse to open menus and sub menus. just click the start button or hit the windows key and type in the first 3 or 4 letters of the program you want and BAM, it shows up, then just hit enter.

Boys---Girls and some of you boys who sound like a bunch of girls... Here is the low down.. Vista is by far a better OS,(NOT The best)the better OS.. The Ultimate version is the best one. XP is an infested virus magnet. There is nooooo need to keep XP alive.... You people who have old computers need to save your allowence and buy your self upgrades to make your computers handle Vista or buy a new computer with Vista or get your self a Mac.. I don't care, but please stop the madness. XP has got to go. Microsoft knows this and you should too. XP was great while it lasted, but there is no way Microsoft is gonna let Apple One up on them with leopard or panther or what ever animal they want to name their OS...

Posted by Bookshelf - Thursday, January 17, 2008 8:12 AM
i also loved the fact that all my programs and utilities worked just fine on Vista x64. stuff like my Power ISO, CCleaner, AVG Anti-virus, Ad-aware SE, Limewire, Utorrent, VLC Player, Everest Ultimate Edition, Teamspeak, Sony Vegas 8, Fraps, WinRAR.

and all my old PC games even run great too, stuff like FEAR, DOOM 3, Quake 4, Quake 3, Diablo 2, Starcraft, Simcity 3000, The Sims 2, Battlefield 2, Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 & 2, Soldier of Fortune 2, Age of Empires 2 & 3, and the list goes on... all running flawless!

Even new games like Gears of War, Crysis, Lost Planet, and Soldier of Fortune 3, all run great. i tested it myself and using fraps my games get the SAME FRAME RATE AS WINDOWS XP.

Posted by Bookshelf - Thursday, January 17, 2008 8:20 AM
like i said above, i used to be a Vista hater... but that was just because i used Vista for like 3 minutes and i based everything off of that and the Anti-hype and all the rumors of vista not being stable, and everything runs slow on it. NOT TRUE.

Trust me, use Vista for a month or two. You wont want to go back to Windows XP. :D it happend to me!

Posted by Bookshelf - Thursday, January 17, 2008 8:24 AM
and i say a month or two, because it takes time to notice all the little things that Vista fixes that you couldnt stand about XP. i mean come on, we've all had our own nightmares and headaches with XP. its a huge relief not to deal with that stuff anymore.

Posted by CreamPieBaby - Thursday, January 17, 2008 9:44 AM
hey narocue, remember when XP first came out how much it sucked? well that's exactly how much vista sucks now. I'll get it someday as my computer is more than capable but not until it doesn't suck. You're probably just some idiot that bought a new computer with it and now you're screwed til an update. Anyways, no matter how much vista sucks, I'm never going to go mac. Maybe I would if they didn't have those stupid ass commercials.

Posted by Ulrichgaming - Thursday, January 17, 2008 12:34 PM
really from a corp. view... it's a big deal to upgrade to vista.... I work for a major corp. and they would have to replace every slave in all the offices to upgrade to vista.... think about it... most corps. don't run big 2gb gaming michines as slaves... but again... they are not making you delete xp and make you by vista... they are just not supporting it anymore... you can keep xp as long as you want... tell nothing works on it anymore... which will be a good 5 years I'd say...

Posted by Krokodyle - Friday, January 18, 2008 8:25 AM
This is going to be a nightmare for the office I manage. We did extensive testing with Vista and our apps, and found it--at best--merely incompatible. This is going to mean a huge investment replacing any older machines that don't have tons of memory or top of the line processors.

We've already banned IE7 from our machines for the time being (since upgrading causes an incompatibility issue with M$'s own Office programs), so I think this XP/Vista issue is going to be the subject of some serious meetings in my boss' office...

G4 Sucks at getting the truth ... again!!!

Support after June of 08??????

Microsofts website says that updates continue through 4/14/2009. Then even though updates stop, support runs until 2012!!!!!!

Holly crap this is a steaming pile of BS.

bleahy do you find this crap, or does your boss hand it to you.

"We at Microsoft beleve that it is time to move foward and have decided to stop production of the familar XP and hugely better. The rumors of us jacking up Vista prices when we stop is complete balderdash. I meen when have we ever price gouged our loyal slaves... I mean consumers.

Posted by Metonic4289 - Tuesday, January 22, 2008 7:44 PM
I'll say this.... VISTA PWNS XP. I have the home basic.. I have very few problems. Yes it has its ups and downs, but it like all NEW OS's itll take time to work out the kinks. I had more problems when I got xp than when i got vista. and on my last computer - similar specs as my new computer - I had more problems that needed to be fixed with xp than vista. with vista i ahd only one problem since i got it, With XP the first motnh i had it i had atleast 30 or 40 problems, half of which i had to fix thru bios, or shutting off certain programs or changing settings on programs, waiting for an actual fix from MS.

When did you switch to High Def ?
