CES 2008: Alienware Curved Monitor Interview
Posted By: Brian Leahy - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 3:45 PM

One of the coolest things we saw at CES 2008 was Alienware's curved monitor prototype that hopes to finally address the issues of peripheral vision in games.

The monitor is equivalent to two 24" LCDs and looks amazing running Crysis.

Check out our interview now and look forward to this tech releasing in about 6 months.

That's completely unnecessary.

Unnecessary ? says you , I want one.
I do like how the guy says "it takes into consideration your peripheral vision" because games these days are not doing that and its called FOV = Field Of Vision and my guess is that that screen makes ones FOV horrible but I'm sure in the future it can be programed for.

Hmmm. I never knew Crysis was a lumberjack with bullets simulator.

Well, I better start saving my pennies so I can pay the $3000 it's going to be for this sweet ass monitor

Everybody knows Crysis is a lumberjack simulator. As for the monitor, looks like it could be fun, and a nice thing to have, if I got some money hanging around. It's suppose to make stuff easier to do. I'll check it out see if it really works, though I do have all my monitors on a slight curve like that around me, so the theory seems to be already in use over here. Plus I would like a monitor that big anyway, for awesomeness.

The problem with this monitor is the ultra wide view is not supported by most games. I have the triple-head to go device that allows for a ultra wide viewing angle and had found that most games knick this in the bud by setting the width of the game before allowing the height. This in effect sets your left to right viewable to the same as a 4:3 screen, and then trims your vertical so that you can’t see as much above or below. This does not seem too noticeable at first, but when you compare it someone without the ultra wide view, you see it.

In WOW, I contacted the support team to see if it was a configuration that I did not set right and was told that it was ADDED to the code of the game since people on 4:3 screens where complaining that allowing the viewable to extend past the 4:3 aspect was giving players with high end equipment an unfair advantage in PvP gaming. So they changed the coding to allow the screens, but to trim the vertical instead of extending the horizontal view.

He means unnecessary regarding the weiners comment, not the facilitation of the greatest TV/PC screen ever made, lol.
