WB Got Payout From Blu-Ray?
Posted By: Brian Leahy - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 12:03 PM

As you all know, Warner Brothers went Blu-Ray, but rumor has it that the WB was rewarded with a fat stack ($500 million!!) of cash money for their choice.

The story goes like this: Warner was seeing its DVD sales slump because of the format war and wanted to end it quickly. They preferred HD-DVD, but going Blu would end it sooner. They gave Toshiba a chance if they could get another Blu-Ray studio to switch.

FOX was apparently lined up, but dropped at the last minute due to a reported $120 million payout by Sony.

This lead Warner to go Blu-Ray as well. If true, this is $620 million of payouts by Sony.

Tough luck, Toshiba. You win this game with your checkbook, not lower prices.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Sound Advice: Blu-ray wins in format war, but at what cost?

Er, this was reported and debunked last week. You guys at G4 really lost your grip on the pulse...

I guess Microsoft isn't the only one who can play that game. What do the high road Sony fanboys have to say now.

We get saddled with an inferior product because Sony ponied up the dough. Luckily I haven't purchased HD-DVD or Blu-Ray yet but, almost all of the reviews I have read state that the HD loads faster, the interactive features are better, and the backward compatiblity with DVD is better.

Of course since I don't have either I am just talking out of my ass.

Posted by Ghost52 - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 12:28 PM
i agree with Exocite i saw this about a week ago. what the hell g4? step up your game a little bit.

Posted by BERT0NE - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 12:30 PM
Only MS would do such a thing, you should feel shame to suggest blu-ray would do such a thing!!!

Posted by cmdluke - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 12:32 PM
taggy23, i don't notice any problems with load times or dvd compatability with my ps3 blu-ray player.
and the features are superb. whatever you are reading is full of she-ite

Posted by altizar - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 12:34 PM
Look at the PS3 / Xbox. Same thing applies, we're saddled with an inferior product cause MS is shelling out all the cash to the game developers. They didn't have alot of cash left over to shell out to the movie studios. got pick you battles, and while MS is in a stalemate on the console wars, Sony just one the Blu-Ray one.

HEY RETARDS - Microsoft does not own HD DVD... So stop linking Microsoft to this battle.. Microsoft supports not own HD DVD... Unless you are to retarted to understand that, you should not be blogging about things you do not understand..

Sony bluray sux compaired to HD DVD, thats a fact... Look it up before you talk..

Posted by santjnthn - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 12:45 PM
I have both Bluray and HD DVD and I can tell you for a fact that HD DVD is a whole lot better than bluray.. Just the interactive stuff makes is a whole lot better. Load time and the backwards compatibility works so much better than bluray.. Bluray is not bad at all, don't get me wrong, but it's nothing but HD discs with no other stuff that makes it better. It's just plain.. Thats it...

Posted by hetman - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 12:46 PM
Who cares. This is business not charity. Anyways the beauty of the 360 is that it does not rely on any format to win. It is a gaming console and that is what it does beautifully.

Posted by cmdluke - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 12:46 PM
santjnthn, how is it a fact? isn't it preference? what evidence do you have to base your "fact" on? It is a fact that Blu-Ray holds more data than HD-DVD picture and sound are comperable on both so how are you basing your "fact" unless its just your opinion that you are shoving down everyone else's throat?

santijnthn

your a retard, where do you get in any way shape or form that HD-DVD is better than blu ray ... shut your mouth before you talk siht about something in which you know nothing.
Everyone knows the facts.
Bluray has 5x the capacity as HD-DVD
They sell 3x more movies
The only thing HD-DVD has over Blu-Ray (which is pretty cool) is that they put the regular DVD movie on the disc, so you can play it in a regular dvd player as well.
And btw MS has money invested into HD-DVD development, so you can relate the two very easily.

Posted by cmdluke - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 12:52 PM
hetman, yeah if you can get it to work =P

Posted by imacman1 - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 12:52 PM
Yes, The feed said this wasn't true last week, what's up G4?

Posted by imacman1 - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 12:57 PM
And MS has money if they wanted to throw it at someone, MS is in the thinking that not HD DVD or Blu Ray is the new format but digital downloads. Also Blu Ray isn't better than HD DVD, they are about equal except for the storage. But at least HD DVD has delivered what they promised since the beginning. BR has had image issues and let's not forget about some of the first players some people bought that can't play some movies now because they can't be updated.

Posted by Ulrichgaming - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 12:59 PM
Well even though this is a complete Rumor.... I'd like to point out some things with the above.... no where in that article does it say Sony paid anything.... and if you look at this article by the same person.... he is well aware that blu-ray is made up of multiple companies not just sony....

"A: First of all, Blu-ray is a group of companies. And I have nothing against Sony"

http://www.post-gazette.com/ pg/07321/834644-96.stm

If interactive stuff is the only difference.... I could care less... Give me blu-ray for the win because it has a catchier name lol

Posted by santjnthn - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 1:00 PM
@ Narocue - You are SOOOOOO wrong about Bluray Vs. HD DVD... first off. Size does not matter to movies, most movies don't even fill 50 gigs and by the way... If you don't already know. HD DVD matches Bluray in size... Dude.. DO you not read up on things or do you go with what you think you know... You know nothing... VC1 is what microsoft invested in HD DVD which is what is invested in Bluray as well. Shows how much you know... Microsoft is invested in market place for HD movies... It's not a loss at all for Microsoft... All they did is vested software to make is that much better than bluray... I know.. I own them both.. So dude. I know what I'm talking about.. A lot more than you... so clean up your act and do some homework.. KID!!!

Posted by BERT0NE - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 1:02 PM
MS writes the software for the HD-DVD but who cares...

as far as me putting money down on one to win forget it... by the time this war is over flash memory will be king because it will be smaller in size, have more memory and make less noise!!

no need for great big CD/DVD trays, please God make it so!!!

Posted by LOAGEEKS - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 1:03 PM
NOTE: This article is only a RUMOR. Which means it is NOT fact NOR true.

In my opinion this article is crap, its sources is from some shmuck who is obviously anti-BluRay/Sony.

I thought G4 is suppose to post real news, what are they owned by fox news now.

I get on about 10 other websites that deal with the news on the format war, and for some reason G4 is the only one that posts something like this, which makes me believe its a complete lie and all they want to promote is flaming.

Its common sense, BR outselling HDDVD in the entire world by a large margin. It was only going to be a matter of time before all the studios decide to go Blu-Ray exclusive.

Posted by santjnthn - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 1:05 PM
At least Toshiba was trying to get studios to sign on the HD DVD, they are so sure about the format that they did not feel they needed to buy anyone out like Sony does... How does that make bluray better when you payout companies to back up you product... Do all your selves a favor and look up the DVD Forum and read it carefully.. HD DVD was approved a long time ago and Bluray was not.. The DVD Forum has been the say all to the DVD meida industry..

Just stirring the POT...

Posted by akmenace - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 1:09 PM
I have them both and blu ray is way better then HD DVD i replaced transformers 3 time cause my kids got to it and it stopped playing. but never had to do that with the blu rays my kids got cause they cant skratch them. wasnt paramount sales better on blu ray before toshiba payed them to go HD DVD to help the now and still losing format.

Posted by cmdluke - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 1:10 PM
um, sony didn't pay anyone out, HD-DVD did the paying out to paramount.
get your facts straight before you over exert yourself. why do you care so much anyway?
and BTW, owning both formats doesn't make you an expert. its still just your personal opinion.

Posted by c1001z - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 1:11 PM
Sony pay someone off to peddle their subpar technology??? ...SHOCKER!!!

Hologram disks are only a few years away thus making this whole format war pretty senseless.

Sony has too much pride for its own good.

Posted by santjnthn - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 1:14 PM
@ BERT0NE - Dude, I can not agree with you more... Digital downloads like music downloads will be the way to go. It's already heading that direction.. Netflix, Microsoft Live, ITunes.. Oh yea... It will be the way to go... this war is going to end with Downloading movies being the winner... If you boys who own a PS3 don't already know... Disney, MGM, Newline, WB is aleady supporting HD movies on Market place. SO really, Microsoft is not losing anything from HD DVD. If anything, they have that much more than PS3 in the HD movie department... Some people just don't care about owning the dics. Just as long as they can see it in HD..

Posted by IBangedYourMOM - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 1:21 PM
G4 IS SOOOO LATE ON THIS NEWS... and PLEASE Xbots FanGirls, Stop mentioning M$. They don't own any real technology. so blow me

Posted by hetman - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 1:24 PM
@santjnthn. Digital downloads are the future. America should be beefing up its internet infastrucer asap. Disks just take up space.

Posted by IBangedYourMOM - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 1:24 PM
Oh Microsoft isnt losing anything, But all the Xbots who bought the HD add on for their crap box did lose. Not only did they lose $$200 dollars but their self-respect.

Posted by cmdluke - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 1:25 PM
santjnthn, yeah some people don't care about owning discs, but so many people do care about owning the discs and the packaging. DDL movies is deffinately going to be big, but it will NEVER replace a physical format.

Posted by silentbehn180 - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 1:27 PM
I don't like digital downloads...nothing real to hold on to and prove your purchase. Smart move for sony, wining the format war will make their lives a million times easier in the future i'm sure.

Funny how you PS3 Fanboy's hate Microsoft soooo much... Xbox 360 is not only the best system to own with the Best games, which will continue with many more to come, but the whole bluray thing is not a problem. They can get a bluray ad on if they want... Not a big deal... Dude, Microsoft not only has the best games and the best online network. They also have the best PC games making Microsoft the ultimate company when it comes to gaming.. They have the #1 operating sytem with 90% of the market. The largest, most powerful Software company in the world, what PS3 has... Ahhh Linux... yea, who cares for Linux... Thats why its failing in game development... Linux... Sux..

Stirring the POT my boys, Stirring the pot..

Posted by Ulrichgaming - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 1:34 PM
@santjnthn

Sony already has multimedia servers you can buy and download movies to. Problem is until the downloads become smaller or Harddrives get a lot bigger (also faster) DL HD movies will not be mainstream unless your not keeping the movies... and downloading over them.... So in reality there is a gap to be filled between DL HD content and DVD.... Blu-ray fits that void... also MS and toshiba left blu-ray to start HD-DVD because the Blu-ray group would not let MS put their interactive program on the disks.... FACT! MS didn't like being told no... so they went off to make their own media with toshiba.

Posted by maxjive - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 1:37 PM
Forgetting that in the future the internet will rule the world, I found it interesting from this article and others, that movie houses like WB, Universal, and Fox initially preferred HD-DVD due to lower manufacturing costs, cheaper players, and better overall architecture of the HD-DVD platform.

Of course Blu-Ray holds more "data", but this happens to be irrelevant for making movies, since they comfortably fit on either platform. In terms of movie quality, both are tremendous, with past movie reviews giving HD-DVD a slight edge for color and black level details.

Following this format war is just about as exciting as watching the writer's strike!! Just give me streaming HD online already, forget the friggin' discs!!!!!!

What's an Xbot?

Posted by santjnthn - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 1:41 PM
lets see, 120 gig harddrive, and they make hardrive bigger than that... I love playing my Dvix movies on my Xbox, I even downloaded a movie in 1080p Dvix format.. not much of a problem... The internet is getting faster.. Cable, FIos is making it happen... It's the future and not to distant..

Posted by hetman - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 1:47 PM
I do not understand why people fear having completly digital content. You say you like to hold something physical in your hands. Will if it is physically it is just as likely to break, get lost, get stolen etc. Their is not very many advantages to disks. Finally it would be cheaper because their would be no need to set up and keep going facilities that made disks. Is their a blu ray burner on the market?

Posted by santjnthn - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 1:52 PM
@ Ulrichgaming - Did you pull that story out of you A$$ or what... Microsoft does not like being told no... LOL.. Funny how you made that up.. I don't really know what Microsoft ever done that was wrong... Let's see... Hummm... They made the Xbox and now it's the popular system to have.. #1 Online network... Hummmmm... Oh yea.. WINDOWS... It made the internet possible... HDDVD is great. and I give it to maxjive, He does his homework... they are going to lead in HD Movie downloads... They just keep signing up more and more studios. Microsoft will lead over any electronics company like Sony because Software runs everything we use today and with out it, you can't run your hardware...

"Sony bluray sux compaired to HD DVD, thats a fact... Look it up before you talk.."

Fanboy.

"I do not understand why people fear having completly digital content. "

People like to have a piece of physical evidence of their purchase. They want to be able to have their stuff as a fact even if their PC hard drive fails.

" Xbox 360 is not only the best system to own with the Best games, which will continue with many more to come, but the whole bluray thing is not a problem."

Fanboy again.

"They can get a bluray ad on if they want."

They don't like getting their ego hurt.

"They have the #1 operating sytem with 90% of the market."

Studies show recently that 75% of PCs are Windows.

" Linux... Sux.."

I declare this man a fanboy. Never touched Linux, yet he says it sucks. I actually like Ubuntu.

Posted by Yoshi5up - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 1:56 PM
" WINDOWS... It made the internet possible... "

Actually, Macs did that. Macs developed the visual desktop idea.

" #1 Online network"

Yes, that's obviously why it crashes.

"They just keep signing up more and more studios. "

Not from what I see. I see about 3 Blu-Ray exclusive studios to every 1 HD-DVD exclusive.

I hate Discs they are old school... This war is a dirty duece, I would bet on flash this is the way to go, more direction and less problems... but that is just my choice for the future... It will be great when I can cary my pc on a flash drive and just plug it in at home, work or school...

Laptops are great but this is a good option

even if you don't have good internet just go to blockbuster and have them put the movie on the flash for you... hell who knows how far it could go... non of the sorry all those movies are out... less stuff in the dump.. I could hear all the tree huggers now calling me scum because I payed for a disc at the store...

The only hate I feel on here is you against anything Sony. I dont feel like getting in a pissing contest with you over which is better, but MS does not have the superior online network. Sony's is free, and I've been playing the siht out of COD4 on PS3 with no problems. Then I got to my cousins to play on his 360, and we had the worst time just waiting for the network. Clogged and running like crap trying to get a match. And he pays for this service I get for free. PSN effing rules, live will never last when you can get the same thing free somewhere else. Oh yeah, and all my demo's and trailers, and downloadable content is free. They dont cost me "points".

Posted by Narocue - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 2:10 PM
Santjnthn

do you ever wonder why you spend all of your time defending yourself, and your comments? Rarely do I see someone agree with the garbage you spew. take the hint that you are wrong 90% of the time, and actually get some real information on the items you are backing so you dont look like such an idiot.

Posted by santjnthn - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 2:14 PM
@ Narocue - Funny how free does not ad up to better... Free means nothing when it has very little support. PSN is far from being like Xbox live... Maybe it's because it's free... I had free dial up back when dial up was the only way to get internet, it was not better. Xbox live only cost .14 cents a day. I pay more for my internet service, and I pay more to get games and I pay more for a lot of other things, so $50.00 once a year is nothing at all for me. I bet I pay more on Gas a year than my Xbox live account. I don't mind, it give us Xbox 360 fans the best online gaming expirience that of PSN. So, it's stupid to compare the two when Xbox live is still leading even when the $50.00 charge.

Posted by Yoshi5up - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 2:15 PM
" What Kiddy name is that... "

Cheap attack is cheap. I actually enjoyed Super Mario World, not like you're old enough to remember it.

"TW, if windows which you say is so bad, why is it that since Windows 95, Microsoft still holds 90% of the PC market and Apple still holds like 10%."

Did you even read what I said. Window's control is plummeting due to the floppage that is Vista. I only use it because of DirectX10, which is MS's cheap way of getting people to buy Vista.

"ac is a P$$y OS for people who don't know computers"

Like movie studios, ISPs, many businesses, and many people/groups that are somewhat respectable.

Posted by hetman - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 2:15 PM
@Narocue. All demo's and trailers are free on XBox live. The last month is the only time I have ever had problems with live. Lets see if psn can handle 10 million people. If it does and they keep it free I will by highly impressed. And finally I have many things that I have bought that have been completly digital. Movies, music, and games. I have not had a problem with any of them. So I do not care to have a disk it is just a waste of space. Flash drives are a good alternative but I hope for completly digital downloads one day. And know one has answered my question is their a blu ray burner you can buy?

Posted by Ulrichgaming - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 2:16 PM

Continued.

" the locked up OS, you can't do any hardware upgrades or change anything"

Ahem, Mac Pro.

" more gaming developers don't support it still and hardly any program companies either"

Bootcamp defeats that argument. You can run Windows in a Mac, but not opposite, because Microsoft is a stuckup ass.

"Mac is not for me, I'm too advanced for that crap."

Then you should be using Linux, because any tech people would prefer Linux, which is highly customisable.

@ hetman - The only problem is that PSN is not handling 10 Million people. So no one will ever know... You can't say it can handle something that has never happend. How many people are really playing on PSN. Is that even a million yet. Come on PS3 fanboys, come up with something better than that.. Don't speculate.

Digital DLs are years from being feasible. Only tech nerds are even aware of what little bit of it exists now and the US does not have the broadband infrastructure to support it. Imagine trying to DL a 25 gig movie on your 300k per second DSL. It would take hours; even with a 1000k cable modem it would still take too long to DL. It will take a very long time for us to adopt this technology, I don't see it happening before the next 10 years.

Posted by hetman - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 2:31 PM
I think movie studios and music studios should just offer you right to most of their material. You pay a one time fee saying I buy such and such movie. Regardless of what future format you release you will mail me a copy. That is to easy though, and it would stop people from making money every 10 years when format changes.

With profile 2.0 coming out this year Blu-ray can do everything that HDDVD can do. Also the Blu-ray has 50 gigs to HDDVD's 30 gigs which is needed Transformer for example could not fit Lossless audio because they ran out of space. How would something like LOTR fit? Blu-ray has a Max video transfer rate of 40Mbps where as HDDVD is 28Mbps, if the same title is optimized for each format the Video quality will look slightly better on Blu-ray, Batman Begins will most likely show this. HDDVD is the inferior product, the only thing that it had going for them was all of the features were available from the beginning. For me I would rather wait a year or two to have a better product if its going 10 years than to have something that’s good now but has no room for improvement, HDDVD is as good now as it will ever be and it has already shown its limitations with lack of space for lossless audio, where as Blu-ray's only current limitation is interactivity which is being added.

Sony's greed at work. Sony couldn't have another failure like UMD. I am getting tired of Sony forcing new video formats on us when we buy their gaming systems. Now, you have Sony bribing movie studios to keep their Blu-Ray format alive.

I have never heard of a 56 gig disc, I have heard of a 51 but they have not been able to make it play on all players as of yet and if they can't play on all players they can't release a movie on it, apparently however they say the 100 gig Blu-rays will play on current players but there are currently no plans to release a movie on those as of yet.

Sony is very slick, money talks in the world....But hey lets face it, they had to buy there way to win... Unfortunately, I rather have a console that plays great games, and not a movie player lol.

LOL, if you want to see a quality movie go to the movies cheapos... Don't sit at home with your blue disc and wank.....

I rather play a decent video game.... that's just me... well there is always next year.... LOL Warhawk and GTA5... what a great line up for such a super duper powerful machine... lol

Why do you need 50 GB of BLU movie moron...
I wouldn't pay for a 50 GB unless your mom was in the flesh with her face down...

Another thing is this imagine if Sony did lose the battle in regards to movies. They bet there whole company on it.. IF they lost it would ultimately be the end PS3. Are they going to advertise its quality games lol... PS3 service might be free but heck I rather pay so I can chat with others... SVR 2008 you guys are to busy wanking because you system cant handle support. Also word for the wise.. Because it free someone is paying for it and also it can limit the growth or success of a product. Genius... Want planet did these PS3fanboys come from... Sony does have so much money in the bank lol.

@SGRSBSKIER

and if blu ray has been the better format why is it they are still playing catching up to a format that was released 6 months before theirs?

yeah it looks to me like blu ray needs the extra space so that people wont have to download the firmware update for their players! Since not all of the blu ray players come with a ethernet connection...

better format please!

all toshiba needs to do is make some ads on tv just like those hd dvd ads you see on the walmart commercials. one more thing hd dvd is a storage media not a format. there are different types of formats that hd dvd requires for movies such as mpeg 2, VC-1, mpeg 4, etc. even me a 14 yr old knows more than most of you guys. Also, you can put ANYTHING on an HD DVD basically ANY type of data on it, its just like CD and DVD and micrsoft does not own hd-dvd in anyway it is toshiba's disk storage type
