CES 2008: DLP Takes On Plasma, LCD
Posted By: Jonathan Hunt - Monday, January 07, 2008 3:48 PM

Over the last couple of years, when it comes to HD televisions, the talk seems to be all about plasma vs. LCD. The third option, DLP has seemingly fallen by the wayside. At CES this year, however, DLP stands to make quite the comeback, with the new 240Hz display mode DLP TVs.

The new products sport a 50% increase in motion reproduction and boast contrast ratios of up to 500,000:1. Word is that Mitsubishi is also preparing to unveil a laser HDTV, working on the same premise as DLP technology.

No official products appear consumer ready yet, but then again, the week just started. What do you guys think? Are you ready for a Laser Television?

I have been selling tv's for a couple years now... so here is my take on it.

Laser is going to be the next big thing.

You think LCD/Plasma looks good? Just wait, from what i have been told BY Mitsubishi its THEIR lasers that are going into it (Mitsubishi is a leader in laser tech) and you will even be able to mount these TV's on the wall. They will still use a DLP chip (from what im told) and the contrast ratio will be well over 100,000:1 (which means that this will look really good).

I thought mitsu was going to reveal it this year at CES... i guess not?

DLP will be around for a long time still to come. Mostly in actual projectors though. Soon all movie theaters will upgrade to DLP projection because of the clarity.

We shall see what happens

DLP had an AWESME tv that could display 2 video feeds at once and when you wore glasses one person saw one video and the other glasses saw the other video. There was a switch on the glasses too. It works by using a 120 Hz tv and alternating between the videos. It was amazing the video was PERFECT.

The thing I hate most about DLP and projection LCD, and HD projectors for that matter, is that you have to plop down 70 to 200 bucks for a new bulb every year or two to keep these TVs running. That is not a cost savings.

DLP is a technology which should just stay dead. Even with a 500,000:1 contrast ratio, the fact that it produces the worst picture of all 3 formats shows it's about the benjamins, not about the picture.

Plasma, LCD, and DLP. That's the order of clarity for good reason.

Note: CRT is still the best, but who makes CRTs anymore?
